HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Montserrat Caballe celebrates her 68th birthday on April 12, 2001.

In honour of this occasion, I have compiled some of the emails received from many Caballe admirers who have written about their admiration for La Superba.

" Congratulations on a lovely web site, I have been listening to Montserrat Caballe for nearly all of her recording career, to me she is the ultimate of what a soprano diva should be, I would like just to mention what in my opinion are two of the loveliest performances of the great Diva, one is "Sombre Foret" from Rossini's "William Tell" that was on the video called "Rossini at Versailles" the other was on the early recording of "Norma" with Placido Domingo, Ruggero Raimondi and Fiorenza Cossotto, the rendition of the duet "Mira O Norma" by Montserrat Caballe and Fiorenza Cossotto is absolutely out of this world and must rate as the greatest recording ever of this duet, of course these are only two favourites out of a legacy that is unsurpassed."

" I have just discovered your site for "my" Montserrat Caballe... I am so pleased that someone has taken the time and effort...to honor the greatest female voice ever - there never was, and there never will be another Caballe.

I am a great opera lover and have recordings and videos with a great many sopranos and mezzos, but none, not even Callas comes close (ion my opinion) to her interpretation of, for example, Norma. She, not unlike Placido Domingo (my favorite tenor, of course), carry their heart in their voices, and it makes for wonderful music. I have never seen her live on stage and discovered her voice some 15 years ago on the operas she recorded with Placido Domingo. Ever since then, I collect her discs and have the video of Norma from Orange...

" The love for Caballé was born 30 years ago, through her recordings, but the very first time I heard her singing live in Norma, was at The Scala theatre, in Milan as a gift for my eighteenth birthday !!! I could listen to her voice during the following years in Arabella by Strauss and in many other recitals always in Rome."

" Montserrat Caballe is my all time favorite soprano. She has brought such great joy into my life. I was not an opera fan until I was introduced to her singing."

" My most favourite recording is that of Bellini's La Straniera( New York,1969,live, by GALA).If you haven't heard the climax of Straniera's entrance you don't know what it means to hear an angel sing. Her delivery of Bellini's arrow-like melodies is unbelievable and she makes us familiar with one of Bellini's less known but truly magnificent in melodies operas. My second choice will be Handel's Gulio Cesare where she has to compete with Sutherland's miraculous performance in the same part. She's a winner! The aria Per pieta possesses a breathtaking beauty and her delivery of Handel's variations is of superb musicality, while her endless pianisimi transfer you to a dream world (New York,1967,live,GALA)...

What I always admired in Caballe was her true love "not just admiration but true love"as she puts it, for Maria Callas and the fact that she was sincere enough to say "We all listen to Maria's recordings no matter how hard we try to deny it ".
