DID YOU KNOW...

  • Montserrat met her tenor husband Bernabe Marti in a production of Madama Butterfly in 1963 in northern Spain. A few months later they were engaged, and were married on August 14,1964 in the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat in Cataluna.

    • They have two children: a son, named Bernabe, Jr. and a daughter, also named Montserrat (also called "Montsita", to distinguish her from the elder Montserrat).

  • Montserrat Marti is now also a soprano in her own right, and mother and daughter have recorded an album of songs and arias together.

    • Montserrat considers the "Norma" she sang on July 20, 1974, her finest operatic performance. It was given as a single night performance in an open-air ampitheatre in Orange.

  • At the climax of her "Vissi d'Arte", Caballe sings all the top notes in one single breath. Her phenomenal display of breath control in this aria has never been equalled by any other Tosca interpreters of her generation or thereafter.

  • Caballe's heart of gold is legendary:

    • Montserrat gives an annual recital in a basilica in the town of Ripoll to benefit charities and institutions she supports.

  • She celebrated her sixtieth birthday with a Paris recital at the Palais Garnier to benefit the Worldwide Foundation for AIDS Research.

    • Throughout her career (honoring a request by benefactors who had underwittten her musical training), and even after she had made it to the top and could command enormous fees, Montserrat sang every year at the Teatro de Liceu in Barcelona for a fraction of the fees she customarily receives. She is widely recognized as a major factor in the survival of the Liceu as a major opera house in Europe.

    • A German newspaper wrote in September 2000 that Caballé gave her platinum ring to a small girl in Sofia , apparently in exchange for the small silver ring the girl gave her at the Caballe concert in Bulgaria.

    • Montserrat is an accomplished painter, a hobby she took up as a form of relaxation at the family's farm. Her work had been admired (albeit anonymously) by the great Catalan painter Miro, who proposed to swap one of his paintings for one of (unknown to him) hers.

Montserrat politely turned the offer down.
