HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAREST CABALLE!

There are many, many stories that attest to Caballe's graciousness and kindness to her admirers.
This particularly charming story is from New York City:

 Caballe with roses

"I was working at the Met as a supernumerary in the early '70s. Caballe was around a lot those days, Norma, Trovatore and such. I always loved her and was so excited every time I heard and saw her that I would practically walk into walls. She sang a few performances of Vespri, and as was my habit, when I was not on stage, I would fold myself into the curtain in the wings and stand riveted as she performed. I never knew if she saw me there, but when she sang the Siciliana, it never failed to make me cry. She carried a big bouquet of yellow roses in that scene and would exit after the aria, stage left, brushing past me as she went. It was her last Vespri, and I was completely enthralled. Well...

As she exited the stage, she pulled out one of the roses and tossed it to me. It felt like an experience from another century. I still get chills when I remember it. I pressed it in a book and after about 20-some years, when I opened it to look, it had turned to powder. It is my favorite of many Caballe memories."
